Goapele Mohlabane was born in Oakland, CA, she grew up in a very politically active family. Her father was South African political exile Douglas Mohlabane. Her parents met him while studying in Nairobi, Kenya.

Goapele attended the Berkeley Arts Magnet School when she was very young and led a pre-teen peer support group. She also became very involved in various groups that combated sexism and racism. In high school, Goapele sang in the Oakland Youth Choir and became part of a semi-professional music group called Vocal Motion. When she graduated from high school, she attended the Berklee School of Music, where she studied music theory.

Goapele signed to Skyblaze Recordings in 2001 and completed her debut CD. After that she toured North America with Spearhead after which she returned to the studio to work on her second CD.
